Black Matte Glaze

A new experimental glaze in the RAL studio palette

"Black Matte"

John Flournoy passed along some results of his use of Black Matte, so I asked him how he had used it. Here's a a mini-workshop, courtesy of John.

"started by rolling a thin slab somewhere between 1/4" and the next mark down on my North Star slab roller.  I then cut random width strips about 11/2" wide and then cut them down to 3-4" lengths and formed them to look like ribbon candy.  Using a slump mold I cut a disk 1/4 thick by 4 inches or so in circumference and placed it in the bottom then just built up from there attaching the ribbon candy pieces,  All of those ribbon shapes were pressed to flatten a bit, leaving it in the mold I covered it with plastic till the next morning.  I flipped it out of the mold and onto a piece of foam and attached an extruded foot ring then flipped it upright onto a piece of plastic and then covered it and let it sit for about a week.  Once fired I glazed it with the matte black then wiped away most of it to expose the clay.  Next time I will brush on the glaze so as not to waste so much also might  try brushing on a light layer of clear glaze with a fan brush so the raw clay does not feel so rough".

Another application: Lauren Baker - Black Satin Matte inside/Over Byrne, bottom 2/3 outside
