New Glaze added to Studio palette

Hello RAL Potters. We are restarting our blog to aid in communicating information about the glazes we use in the RAL pottery.

New glaze tests

Rutile green - this glaze is best applied thinly over other glazes for effect. Good as a layer over Nutmeg, Licorice, Byrne.

Red orange - may appear to be thick. Needs a very quick dip or a lot of cracking will occur. When properly applied produces red gloss and breaks well over texture as seen here in this test. Note: we are continuing to have problems with this one. We can adjust it and get good results as you can see on this test tile, but it reverts to it’s flaking problems when it sits for a few days. Use this at your discretion, but if you do make sure you do a quick dip and rub any cracks which might appear.

Nutmeg - very good test trial. See the test tiles on the glaze board for various glazes applied over this glaze.

Byrne - may appear to be too transparent. We adjusted this batch to try to control the gelling we often get with this glaze.  Dip twice for a heavier coat for  less transparency. Use one coat for a breaking glaze. Also check the glaze board for the results of glazes apples as a layer over this glaze.

VG Clear - note the new batch test was for one dip. You could get a heavier coat by applying two layers

Matte White and Matte Black - we have had several requests for matte glazes for the studio. these are two possible mattes. Note that they are very opaque (they are mattes!), but are very stable and food safe. Check these tiles in the studio and give us feedback on whether or not you think we should add them to our studio glaze palette.

Oribe - new tests are good, but note the tendency to run (drips on the side). Several people have had good results layering other glazes over Oribe. Given its tendency to run it may be best to use this as a lighter first coat.
